Of the beast that were CLEAN he was instructed to take by SEVENS: SEVEN males and SEVEN females.

Genesis 7:2

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by SEVENS, the MALE and his FEMALE: and of beasts that are NOT CLEAN by TWO, the MALE and his FEMALE.

As for how many were on the ark no one knows that.

Moses is not attributed as taking any animals on the ark.

The first Scripture about this says they went on by 2's, male and female of each but then the clean animals went on by 7's. If we think about that it is understandable. They were on the ark for a year and some of the clean animals were offered up after they left the ark. SO, if the males were offered up, what would be left to breed the females? So, 7 of each clean animal would give them another males for breeding.

(Genesis 6:18-21) And I do establish my covenant with you; and you must go into the ark, you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 And of every living creature of every sort of flesh, two of each, you will bring into the ark to preserve them alive with you. Male and female they will be. 20 Of the flying creatures according to their kinds and of the domestic animals according to their kinds, of all moving animals of the ground according to their kinds, two of each will go in there to you to preserve them alive. 21 And as for you, take for yourself every sort of food that is eaten; and you must gather it to yourself, and it must serve as food for you and for them.”

It was supposed to be 2 of each unclean animal and 7 of the clean ones.
