Can i lie about unpaid work to fill gaps in my cv?

If I am completely honest about my two most recent jobs that i'm giving references for. how likely is it that companies will check if i fabricate voluntary or unpaid work to fill in sizable gaps of unemployment?

    Whether they check or not you tell a lie and you are caught in it. Now you have to remember that lie in case someone starts asking questions.

    It is better to tell the truth. Tell them you were out of work, and you looked for work.
