A lot of it has to do with the economy. Private companies such as Chrysler that were based in Detroit, just aren't generating the revenue they once did and as a result are shutting down. This means lower taxes and revenues for the city and therefore financial devastation ensues. Good luck to you.

I don't think of Detroit as being particularly liberal. Mainly just having a decimated middle class.

San Francisco would be a better example of a liberal run city. Or Berkeley.
