Do you think that a great fire could happen today?

I mean a fire like the Great Fire of London or the Great Chicago Fire. A fire where a very large portion of a city was destroyed. I don't mean a forest fire or a fire caused by war. I just mean a huge fire that gets out of control. I'm thinking that it really couldn't because of the number of fire departments that we have, the aircraft that can drop water, and the city water systems that would allow home owners to spray with a hose until a fire truck could get there.

What do you think?

Doubtful in a city like London or Chicago - but terribly possible in a crowded third-wolrd city with much timber construction and limited fire-fighting resources.

In which city? Most First World cities have less crowding and stricter fire codes than they did 150 years ago or Third World cities have today. And even the latter aren't just wall-to-wall slums; they have some better-spaced-out regions and wide streets.

Maybe in India, or one of the African cities. Houses in the Third World are made of poor quality materials and packed close together.

Only if there was a natural disaster that set it off, like an earthquake and/or severe drought.
