What causes intense skin itching after working in yard?

Usually gets worse after showering. Mainly on back, chest and buttocks.

Update:

I've thought about that Sarah. However, I'm 73 years old, been working in yard all my life, and this is relatively new for me.

Don't know if this will help, but it may steer you in the right direction

A few years back, I developed this intense itching on one arm - no sign of bumps etc.. it lasted only about a minute, but was really terrible.

I did some reading.. itching is a form of pain - both pain and itching originate from the nervous system.. so, there is a theory that sun exposure can cause nerve damage

    http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1355312-over...

brachioradial pruritus is believed to be a variant of pain. However, the anatomic location of the neural injury or irritation producing this pain is controversial. Two prevailing hypotheses are proposed. The first postulates that brachioradial pruritus is caused by injury to peripheral cutaneous nerves from sunlight exposure. The second suggests that nerves are damaged at the level of the cervical spine. Both mechanisms appear to be active in many patients.

Evidence supporting the solar hypothesis includes the following:

Many patients with brachioradial pruritus have a history of chronic sun exposure.Kestenbaum and Kalivas[15] postulated that histamine release from mast cells in response to chronic sun exposure might play a pathophysiologic role; they reported a patient with brachioradial pruritus and an elevated serum histamine level.

In some cases, sun exposure has been reported to exacerbate symptoms and photoprotection has been reported to provide amelioration.

Patients typically only describe symptoms on the sun-exposed dorsal surface of the arms and shoulders - so not sure if this applies to you.. do you garden without a shirt on?

One last comment - if this is your problem, there isn't a cure - there are medications I have read about, that don't seem to work, according to many people, and others say that ice packs are the only thing that helps.. for myself, I don't like medication - it hasn't been too much of a problem, but if it should, I will be looking into how to strengthen the nervous system naturally.. see if that helps..

It could be sun spots, fleas, allergies, or mange. If the dog stays out alot, then it is probally fleas. You can take it, and have it bathed, and hair cut at the local vet. They will let you know what is causing it.
