Winchester model 70 Featherweight .243?

Up to what range can this gun accurately shoot from using a 110 grain .243 round?

Update:

By accurately "Tex" I don't mean the accuracy of the shooter. After a certain distance, the controlled flight path of the bullet is going to be ultimately affected by the factors of nature and the bullets landing point will no longer be in control of the shooter. What I want to know, (lets say the shooter is the best shot in the world), how far can the bullet travel efficiently before it is overall out of the control of the shooter?

First and foremost the Featherweight line are hunting rifles. They are not intended to be highly accurate or the ultimate in accuracy. The light contour barrel is very limiting. Two main reasons, first light contour barrels experience MUCH more " whip " then a heavy barrel. Secondly, the light contour barrel heats up VERY rapidly, so repeated shots begin to " walk ".

Let's say at it's best while a .243 can be very accurate out to and possible beyond 500 yards, I would of course without any experience with that rifle, only the thought being limited to the capability of a light, factory " out of the box " rifle I would guesstimate in the right conditions about 300 good yards of accuracy. You notice many qualifications to my thought ? The person making the shot, the ammo used, and weather conditions have great bearing on if the shot could be made, one shot cold barrel.

Again, I would qualify this thought in that, even a 300 yard shot on game or varmints, may certainly not be ethical. The only way to determine this definitively is to get out and work with the rifle. I have done best with the 100 grain Sierra Matchking Bullets.

My personal specification to what constitutes an ethical shot I would consider, is this: After firing numerous groups to prove data, I will consider safety of the shot, and prepare to fire, if the shot is to a distance where I know my outfit will group shots into a 3" group maximum. This is and effective quick kill with good placement. For most of my use, I shoot groundhogs, a groundhog's head, a solid hit is about 3" in size. This accuracy is also fine for other uses on game and varmints.

Remember to keep the barrel cool when working at the range, because the heat WILL make things go haywire. Your asking " How far can the bullet travel efficiently before it is overall out of the control of the shooter " ? This depends on much more then " the best shooter in the world ". Weather conditions, and if the rifle barrel is cold, is the influence that will change everything. This you must understand.

Edit : As a side note, the long range use of the .243 has often been looked at by long range match shooters. The .243 IS a 6MM, and the 6MM PPC cartridge has been the standard of Benchrest Shooters for the last couple decades. So it only follows if the 6MM is mostly unbeatable at Benchrest, would it work at long range also ? Most still use a .30 caliber for long range shooting.

What's the BC of the bullet? What's the muzzle velocity? What's the elevation of the shooter? What's the temperature?

Ignoring all that .243/6mm is a common round to see at 1000+ yard competitions, so given the best shooter in the world and the best gun in the world with a load tailored to that gun, well over 1000 yards.

Note I'm talking about punching paper, not hunting. No where near enough steam left in that round at 1000 to take anything bigger than a coyote.

The accuracy has much more to do with your skill than with the rifle. What is your criteria for "accurately"?

Your definition of accuracy makes no sense. Clearly, you are not well versed in the science of exterior ballistics, "Stig." Bullets are not radar guided. There is no telemetry. It should be obvious that the bullet is beyond the shooter's control the instant it leaves the barrel. Once you pull the trigger nothing you do can change the bullet's destiny.

Provided the rifle is in excellent condition, well over 500 yards. That's what the RIFLE is capable of doing. What you're capable of doing with the rifle will be determined by you.
