intellectual anime suggestions?

I typed so much and I kinda regret it cuz that usually makes people not read it. You can just skip my little comments if you want. Maybe read the first anime list, and the first sentence of each priority listed. I dunno.

Anyway, I asked this before (6 months ago) but yeah xD Round 2-

Basically anime with intellects, or any anime with a well plotted storyline that has parts which impresses the watcher.

I'm going for Anime like:

Zetsuen No Tempest

Psycho Pass

Code Geass

Death Note

I disliked:

Darker than Black (the way the plot was performed was appalling. I could talk about how some characters act completely out-of-character just so they can get killed -Reviewer)

Ranma 1/2 (Lacked plot and didn't get me thinking)

Bleach (I mean, really -_- I barely used my brain here)

HATED Ergo Proxy. It requires a lot of brainpower, which I generally enjoy using, but not >wasting<...It was so dull and boring and lacked feeling in the plot that I dropped it. The lead is female but she was dull and boring too.

The few Shonen I did like:

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Soul Eater

Well, there’s only 2, mainly because they’re well thought out. Let’s stick to the first list ^^

I'm not fond of Vampire Knight but it had a storyline, and the rivalry between Zero and Kaname existed. Still, the main protagonist Yuki was utterly weak and clueless. I dislike that. I’d like anime where the main character is not passive/inactive. I’d also prefer the main protagonist not to be some hot-headed powerful but stupid character, (like Naruto.) But if there are other smarter characters to make up for it with enough screentime, then it’s alright xD

I watch anime in subtitles.

It can also be 18+ or R rated, Love, or even Yaoi as long as it's clever, just say so.

Ok guys. I want anime names with at least 2 of these priorities, or contain #1. However, if it’s clever and you absolutely love it and chances are I’ll probably like it too, I’m curious, so just list it anyway without any of this.

But generally, list the anime name and next to it the numbers of what I wrote. Example: Zetsuen no Tempest- 1, 2, 3, 4, 5….

Prioritized Categories:

#1) Psychological, philosophical, or intellectual appeal.

#2) intellectual sparring (of any form.) It could be some ninja battle between strategists or involving knives and swords or even chess analogies. <<I'm a sucker for this

#3) Intense rivalry. Whether it be working together or trying to kill either. Best friends (or just people like L and Kira) against eachother. Suzaku and Lelouch. Makishima and Kogomi. I'm hesitate about adding this because it's rare, and when it appears, such as (( Naruto vs. Sasuke, it's just unappealing in my opinion, using strength rather than intellect. I do enjoy when Shikamaru fights, since he's generally weaker than his opponents and so uses strategies against them, but that's around only three times in the whole series. )) Not to mention Zetsuen no Tempest didn't quite have this yet I love this anime.

#4) Females aren't useless wimps. This is absolutely not necessary (as I liked Death Note even though the females were losers), but it's so cool when a female fights. (Zetsuen No Tempest had female mages and a female fighter. Murder Princess isn't as intelligent as what I'm going for, but you can assume by the title. If there isn't any, ok then, this is not completely a priority)

#5) Good art/quality. I've heard Monster fits somehow with #1, but the quality makes me plan to watch it only as a last resort, since I've been spoiled by studio Bones and amazing anime quality.

Okay, here are my recommendations for you:

Kino's journey - A philosphical anime about a young woman journeying to different countries on her motorcycle. 1 4 5

Moribito, Guardian of the Spirit - A woman warrior agrees to hide a prince from his father, who is trying to kill him. It has the best fantasy storyline of any anime I've seen, though it isn't especially intellectual apart from that and several plot twists. Great art. 1 4 555

Welcome to the NHK - A NEET shut-in finds himself being visited by a girl determined to save him from his lifestyle. Hilariously funny, despite the dark subject, very psychological. 1 2

Fantastic Children - Philosophical, full of angst, and you don't find out what is going on till halfway through. The main female is kind of a doormat, but she isn't the only girl. Art is Tezuka-inspired, so it is simple and different. Looks childlike, but not a kid's anime once it gets into the deeper plot. 1 5

    Stein's Gate - Time travel mind bender. Good fun! 1 2 4 5

Un-Go - A detective anime about a guy with a supernatural sidekick who can force anyone (just once) to answer a question honestly. Interesting, psychological, messes with your head a bit. I liked the art. 1 2 4 5

Noein - Art is a bit different, sketchy style, great music. It's an anime about dimension travel with philosophical bits and plot twists. 1 2 3

Spiral - A cat-and-mouse detective anime with edge-of-your-seat suspense (but a lousy ending. Apparently, you have to read the manga for satisfaction.) 1 2

Paranoia Agent - A woman reports being attacked by a kid on roller skates wielding a baseball bat, and suddenly he seems to be everywhere. Dark, psychological, strange. Ending kind of weak. 1 2 5

And while it's not really intellectual, from what you say, you might really enjoy Hikaru No Go, an anime about a boy who learns to play the strategy game Go. Full of intense rivalries. 2 333
