MLB too lenient with it's PED punishment?

Braun just got nailed by MLB with a 65 game suspension w/o pay. He still most likely gets a $100 million dollar contract when his old one his up. Melky Cabrera of the Blue Jays tested positive for PEDs, served his suspension, still got a World Series ring and oh yea then got a 2-yr 16 million dollar contract. Are players really worried about the risk if the rewards can be that great? Should baseball make the punishment more harsher? How would they be able to account for teams rigging foods with these banned substances to try to get out of a bad contract?

The MLB is way too lenient with PED punishment. They should suspend players 100 games minimum for first time offenders. The whole season for two-time offenders, and a life ban for three-time offenders. They should also let the franchise void that players contract if they are caught using PED's. What I'm saying is the Brewers would be able to get out of Braun's contract of 5 yrs./$100Mish, The reward would then be taken away from the offenders.

I have wonder where people get the idea that baseball is "lenient" on PED use when they, in effect, have the strictest drug policy of al the major sports. Maybe it's because they waited to long to actually enact a policy.

I wonder if, by any chance, you noticed the fact that the NFL has suspended a couple of players for violations of their drug policy in the last couple of days. Today Von Miller, linebacker for the Broncos, was suspended for a whopping FOUR games. Granted, that's a quarter of a season but Braun is going to be gone for 40% of the MLB season.

In addition, Giants safety Will Hill was suspended over the weekend for four games as well. Funny - he also was suspended LAST season as well.

Note also that Braun, like other players suspended under this policy will not be allowed any real contact with his team. No working out at their facilities, etc. In the meantime the NFL players will be allowed to attend training camp and even play in pre-season games.

As for players signing contracts after being busted, that is not necessarily the fault of MLB. Individual teams need to make their own decision as to whether or not someone is worth the risk.

Keep in mind that pro ports is not like most other professions. Chances are that if a construction worker is fined for showing up for work while under the influence, he'll be able to find another construction company to work for.

The bottom line is that this is, while only on the result of a technicality, Braun's FIRST suspension.

And it is being treated as such.

No, the first suspension offense in baseball is approximately 1/3 of a season. In football is is only 1/4 of the season. The process is much tougher now and better than it has ever been. In Braun's case, he will miss more than 1/3 of a season without officially failing a test (as far as the public currently knows).

I think it's way too lenient. A few years ago I came up with what I'd do. 100 games for 1st offense, 162 games for 2nd offense, lifetime for 3rd offense. During the suspensions you're not allowed to play in preseason or playoff games as well but those games don't add toward your 100 or 162 game suspension. And teams can automatically void what's left in the player's contract.

Anyway, that's just what I'd do if it were up to me.

No. Their PED punishment is fine.
