How is the season organised?

So in the AL there are 3 divisions. I assume that every team in the AL will play each other. But there is no overall AL ladder/league standing-right?So its based on position in the division that teams play against each other to advance to represent the AL in the world series??or not?

Update:

Hey-thanks can you explain more about the 'interleague games' please?

Both in the NL and AL, there are 3 divisions. West, Central, East.

Every team plays those in the same division 19 times each year, and the other ones 6 times a year, also they play some interleague games.

That is during the regular season.

At the end of it, the top team in each division and the next 2 teams with best records in the league ( those teams are called Wild Cards) qualifies for the posteason. There are four rounds:

-Wild Card game: The two Wild car teams face each other in a one game playoff, the winner advances, the loser goes home.

-American/National League Division Series (ALDS/NLDS):The division winner with the better record overall faces the wild card team and the other two division champs face each other in a best-of-five series

-American/National League Championship Series (ALCS/NLDS): The ALDS/NLCS winners face each other in a best-of seven series.

-World Series: The American League Champion (decided in the ALCS) and the National League champion (decided in the NLCS) face each other in a best-of seven- series, the winner is World Champions

There are 2 leagues, each with 3 divisions. Each division has 5 teams, giving each league a total of 15. A team will play 20 Interleague games. They will always have more games against a team in their division than a team out of their division. The reason for interleague is simple: with two leagues of 15 teams, a league can play 7 games. That would be 14 teams per league, leaving one team from each league left over. You can have them sit out for the entire 3 or 4-game series, or you can have them play each other. They will always have a few games between the two teams that met in the World Series the previous season. At the end of the season, there will be a total of 10 teams in the postseason: the winner of each division, and the 2 best teams from each league after the division winners advance (these are known as the Wild Card teams). The Wild Card teams will play one game with each other, and the winner will advance to the Division Series. The Wild Card team will play the best team and the other two will play each other. The Division Series is best of 5, so a team must win 3 games to advance. Once both Division Series have ended, the winners play in the Championship Series, a best of 7. Once a team wins 4 games in the Championship Series, they will advance to the World Series, another best of 7.

Yes, for example Boston could win the East with 105 wins,

Detroit first in the Central with 90 wins

Oakland first in the west with 89 wins, then they add the next two losers in the three divisions,(who had the best record) they then play off and the winner plays the National League winner who just went through the same experience. It would be more simple and more fair if they put all 15 teams in both leagues in one division, and the top five of the AL and the top five of the NL went to the play-offs. All these extra play-offs is only to make more money. If it was up to me there would be a 15 team league in both the AL and the NL and only two teams would go to the play-offs and it would be called THE WORLD SERIES! That is the way it used to be, but today all those play-off games weaken the BIG EVENT, THE WORLD SERIES. It used to be equal to the Super Bowl, but not anymore.
