Your question is not specific enough, like do you mean in the USA, the world, or on this site, for example....

since peeps like to "play the fool" on this site, I would suggest that the percentage is higher here than in real life...

as for the posters who suggest there is no such thing as a true atheist, I disagree. The closest I get to an agnostic thought is when I concede that there may have been a creator, but it died or left us to our own devices a very, very, very long time ago.....

ATHEIST - someone who does not believe in a God – any God – not just the Christian one. But that does not mean they do not hold strong moral or religious beliefs! They can follow any religion that does not have a god and there are a lot of those!

Like BUDDHISM – Religious teaching from Buddha and his followers that by destroying greed, hatred and delusion (the cause of all suffering) man can attain perfect enlightenment!

Posts like yours actually drive them further away and even drive decent people out of the churches rather than be associated with such nastiness!

ALL the other religions and atheists live in peace and are ONLY attacked by BAD Christians which causes all GOOD Christians to despair at the damage they do!

The self destruction of Christianity is underway and the only thing that can stop it is to abandon the terrible human emotions, seek to rediscover the idea of a loving god and act like it!

In China there may be a large proportion of declared atheist party members who may be pretending since atheism is the state religion

In Russia once the Communist party fell the bulk of declared atheists came out as theists

Not really. It's just homosexuals get such a bad rap from the Christians here, that it has fallen to us atheists to defend their human rights.

"Atheist" means "without theism", i.e. without a belief in a god.

There are not 'many definitions of atheism',regardless of how you interpret what others are saying.

But to answer your "question", it's an analogy, not an association. And the point, evidently lost on you, was that nobody would choose to be gay, just like nobody would choose to call himself an atheist, unless he were just a masochist who likes being put into a marginalized, persecuted group. And I suppose it's possible some small percentage of people do that. But I'd imagine it's a small percentage.

Perhaps you should educate yourself on the difference between agnostic and atheist. They are not mutually exclusive. One can be an agnostic theist. Agnostic speaks to what you know and atheist speaks to what you believe (or don't, in this case).

All you need to do to be an atheist is not accept the claim "God exists" as definitely true. If your answer to the question "does God exist" is anything other than "yes", (even if it's I don't know) then congratulations, you're an atheist since you lack a positive belief in God.

I don't know but, based on my life experiences, being an atheist comes with a hefty price tag and I doubt very many would be willing to face the social consequences, except to preserve their intellectual integrity.

re. homosexuality: Atheists tend to be intellectual liberals who are willing to support homosexuals, not because they themselves are gay, but because they understand what it means to be persecuted. Note that it was also intellectual liberals, including old fashioned secret atheists, who made it a matter of principle to support racial equality.

What do you mean a fake atheist? You either believe in god(s) or you don't. I don't think I've ever heard of someone believing in god and pretending not to.
