How do you know if your depressed or just upset sometimes?

Hey , I'm 16 years old and atm I'm upset a lot or just have no feeling at all towards anything

Two and a half weeks ago my cat (also my befriend) got poisoned by something outside and died. I am still very emotional about this., and cry every night for him to come back and be with me again. My parents have done loads to help me though this time- paid vet bills, let me print off photos and even got some of his fur personly put in a necklace charm so he's always with me <3

I finished my boyfriend and later on found out that he had slept with other girls when he was on holiday .

My rabbit had a heart attack.

Basically everything has gone down hill in the last couple of weeks. I feel happy and I hang out with friends but once I'm at home or just walking/being alone I hate how everything is and I then get upset again. Sometimes I just sit doing nothing with no feelings towards anything, I don't think about anything then either .

My dad said that I'm depressed but then took it back quite fast after he said it.

How am I ment to know or is it best not to know.?

Hello hun, so sorry to hear about your loss and all your problems :'(

I deal with depression myself and it caused me stress knowing I had it but gave me closure. I talked to my dad about it and this is what he said:

'Labels are crap, not everyone deals with the same emotions or goes through the same problems. Some people are more sensitive than others. We all need to figure out ways to deal with our problems in our own way.'

So you may just be down right now because of all the horrible things that have happened to you, but try to remain positive as stupid and hard as it sounds. Your attitude will affect how your life is, even if your situation sucks you can still be a happy person. For its our attitude and how we deal with things and not our situation that makes our life good or bad.

I hope you can feel better soon.

Katie, sometimes life throws all sorts of problems and heartaches at us, as you have experienced recently. I think you are suffering as any normal teenager would, in fact anyone of any age would suffer after these events. People who are not cat lovers, or indeed pet lovers, will never understand the loss and heartache felt after a pet dies. They don't realise that the pet concerned is actually one of the family. To begin with, you are so blessed to have such caring, loving, and sensitive parents. They love you loads, and are worried about you. This is the most important thing to remember throughout all this pain and sadness. Your boyfriend was just a piece of trash, and you've had a lucky escape from this rat. He doesn't even merit thinking about at all, so forget about him. If your rabbit survived, I hope he/she is recovering well. When you're at home or out walking alone you naturally think about your cat and what happened, so the outcome is that you feel sad and low. It's hard enough when a pet dies, but when you combine that with all your other problems, added to the fact that at 16 there's all sorts of emotional stuff going on in your body, it's easy to see why you feel so bad. Think of all the happy times and memories you had with your cat, and when you're alone try to fill the time doing stuff you like to do, like music, texting friends, computer stuff, calling friends, reading, in fact anything at all that you like doing. Just make sure you have something to occupy your mind. Above all don't sit alone and do nothing. My golden retriever died suddenly aged only4. At the time I was 28, and even at that age it hit me really hard. Now I'm an old fogy, and sometimes I still think about her and get upset. So don't worry about feeling these feelings. I don't think your depressed, just going through a difficult time. So try to fight your way out of these feelings, don't let them get the better of you, and with parents like yours I'm sure you'll win in the end, and feel a lot better, soon. good luck Katie.

Pop along to your doctor. We all need help from time to time and you have had a rough time of it lately. He should prescribe a mild pill to help you get by this difficult time.
