Difference in genres: Rock vs. Pop?

Okay, I'm a little confused, honestly. What makes a song a rock song, versus it being a pop song?

I mean, some of them are obvious - yeah, Katy Perry or Lady Gaga is definitely going to be pop, and Foo Fighters or Pearl Jam are definitely going to be rock.

But I was looking at the Billboard charts, and Imagine Dragons is topping the "rock" charts, along with bands like Capital Cities, Bastille, etc.

I have songs by some of these bands, and I've heard Imagine Dragons on the radio, but I always figured they were considered "Pop" songs. That's closer to what they sound like to me, anyway. I don't hear any of the "rock" part to them.

So, basically I was wondering. What makes these kinds of songs "rock" songs?

Pop songs are usually much softer and more accessible somgs that are usually radio friendly to reach large audiences. Rock music is mostly based around the sound of guitars, bass and drums, while pop music mostly uses technology or synthesisers with vocals being the most important in the mix, however it may use guitars and basses which are usually soft and in the background. Also, many pop bands get mislabeled as rock due to the band members playing instruments.

Rock is music that follows the general layout of guitar, drums, vocallist and bass; with variations of course. There are lots of different types of rock and regretfully, the bassist along with blues influences seems to be gone in todays rock. A pity but thats my opinion. Traditional rock has distorted guitar and a rhythm and time keeping drum, bass accompany the guitar for more groove and rhythm and a vocalist (usually blues styles). However, todays rock is more stripped down. The bassist is gone, the drums will be less evident (or replaced by machines), vocalists use autotune like popstars but usually sing slower and sadder and usually talk about, well, any non pop topic. Guitars may be acoustic and can also be accompanied by electronica.

Imagine Dragons is still modern rock/alternative as it uses acoustic and electronica in a slower, less beat heavy manner. The vocalist also doesnt talk about partying or what ever pop songs talk about these days. Rock is more meaning ful and to be enjoyed and pop is all for fun.

The distinction can be hard to make due to rock being toned down in recent years to appeal to the mainstream like pop does.

I never knew that that was considered rock... wtf.

Why are they calling that ROCK? Rock music don't got autotune, weird beats to it, they use their REAL voices and instruments as TALENT.
