.177 vs .22 big or small difference?

So I'm looking into getting an air rifle and right now am interested in a BSA Supersport in .177 or similar rifle however my local store stocks primarily .22 calibre air rifles. I wanted a .177 for the better range and accuracy as I feel I don't actually need the power of a .22. So is the difference of .177 and .22 that great? should I go for the .22 or try and order in a .177 or look some where else. I wouldn't be shooting over 40m.

Update:

I'm referring to the .22 pellet not the .22 bullet. .177 and .22 pellets are both easily available as is .22lr as I live in the UK and because of the countries gun laws .22lr rifles are very common so ammo's plentiful and so are .22 and .177 pellets, .20 and .25 calibre pellets are much less common.

.177 vs .22 caliber BSA Supersport.

Both will deliver just below the 12ft-lb limit

    .177

    820fps with 8gr pellets = 11.9ft-lbs

    .22

    620fps with 14gr pellets = 11.9ft-lbs

The .177 will give you a better(flat) trajectory. Which makes accurate shot placement easier.

That is not a rifle i'm aware of, nevertheless it's like the others mentioned. When you've got the equal rifle, with the equal powerplant(spring piston), muzzle vigour(.177 vs .22) can be just about identical. The rifle you're looking at most likely gives you around 14ft-lbs of muzzle vigor. Usually, I prefer the .177 in air rifles below 20ft-lbs. Stopping vigor? I'd be at the least as involved with the accuracy. If I had been you i'd try and find a good evaluation or two on this rifle.

.177-cal will not really get you better range. A .22-cal pellet will hold its energy better at longer ranges, in fact.

If your local shop has mostly .22-caliber air rifles, they probably carry mostly .22-caliber pellets, right? Just get a .22-cal. You'll have an easier time getting ammunition.

    Big Difference.

.177 are more better to use for longer range, the pellets are more lighter and can with do the range.

.22 are heavier and can only be shot shorter ranges.
