What would happen if the temperature was 500F degrees?
for 20 seconds? Would we still survive and would the oceans immediately boil?
I don't think 20 seconds would be that bad. Like I've been in a 200 degree F sauna for like 20 minutes and as not affected.

It's believed that the Chicxulub impact at the K-T extinction may have caused two days of 750 fahrenheit heat globally due to ejected material re-entering the atmosphere turning the sky into a giant broiler. The extinction was only 75% of all life so some life did survive, probably from being underground or under water.
Water holds a lot of energy, it would take a long time for the oceans to warm up even if the air was at 500 fahrenheit.
There's a big difference between 500 fahrenheit and 200 fahrenheit. 200 fahrenhei is below the boiling point of water, 500 fahrenheit is not only above the boiling point but paper burns at 451 fahrenheit so many materials catch on fire.

Reminds me of Ironman 3. The writers didn't understand thermodynamics, either.
Okay! Everything is 500F. For 20 seconds! And then... where does all this heat go? Is just the air 500 degrees? Suddenly and then back to normal? I won't ask how.
Water wouldn't change temperature MUCH in 20 seconds, but somethings might just ignite, starting other fires. I wouldn't want to be filling my gas tank, for instance. Or be anywhere outside without heavy clothing. Yes, the heavier the better. A parka would be nice, but not made of synthetics.

The oceans would not boil away and everyone that is inside would be safe but the people outside would not be. If you were outside during this time it would feel like you are sitting in an oven set to broil. Your skin would be badly burned and you would have a heat stroke. Its only for 20 seconds so nothing major.

We would have very bad burns and probably have heatstroke, and water sources would deplete, but not completely boil away.

Everything would pretty much burn out. Everyone would get a heat stroke causing deaths.

It would be the silent killer.
