Number on an old crate. Help finding owner?
I have an old crate from a thrift shop. Hand-written on the bottom is USS Boxer CVA-21 AN-436-90-36, belonging to a Van Der Werff in San Francisco. I understand the Boxer identification but can't reference the owner. Does AN-436-90-36 help?

You can try The National Archives with the last name....that is Niederlander (Dutch) and the serial number. The number match's the the WWII era as does the CVA hull marking...it was changed in 1955 so the number should have been the first issue. The Navy reissued numbers with letter B. They did not use the A or AN. AN was the rating for a Navy Airman in WWII...the trick for you now is to go to the NARA site and make a request. You will get a name and very little more..the other stuff is only given out to family.
