You see a little of everything at college all the way from pajamas to business clothes. The typical outfit for most girls is a tee and jeans or yoga pants and flip flops for the summer. A maxi dress and jean jacket is very cute and is casual for anywhere outside of college but for most colleges that would be considered a more dressy type of outfit in relation to what others are wearing. That doesn't mean you shouldn't wear it and in fact I think you should. A maxi dress is cool, comfy and cute. You can wear whatever you want and if you want to eventually wear yoga pants and a hoodie go for it.
My standard outfit for class on non-working days was a tee or tank and bootcut yoga pants or jeans and wedge flip flops. But 3 times a week I also had a job as an assistant to an attorney and those days I would go to work before or after class and wore my dress clothes to class because I didn't want to have to change. It felt odd at first being the only one in class wearing a professional pant suit and heels but I got over it. I had no choice as the attorney had a strict dress code for me :-)
