Counting ability of a 3 year old?
Does anyone know what the average 3-year-old child should be able to do with numbers? My son was able to count to 15 before he turned 2, could count to 109 before the age of 3, and now, at 3 years old, he can count to over 300 and can recognise 6 digit numbers. He understands that numbers have value as well, for instance, he can count how many sultanas are left in his bowl. He can also do simple subtraction, like if he eats one sultana, he knows how many are left. Would you say he is gifted in this area? And if so, what I should be doing to encourage this?
Phoenix - My aim is not to be boastful. My aim was to find out if he is gifted by listing the things he can do. I'm sorry you find it hard to believe that my son can read 6-digit numbers, but he can read them clearly and with accuracy. We go for walks on our street and the electricity boxes have 5 and 6 digit numbers eg. 107879, and he can read the number like 'One hundred and seven thousand, eight hundred and seventy nine'. Why would I say he could do it if he couldn't??
Also, just because your daughter, who is gifted in maths, can't read 6-digit numbers yet, it doesn't mean that my son (and other kids) can't do it. Obviously, there are varying degrees of giftedness. No single child (including your own) does not set the benchmark, I'm afraid.
It's a shame that I can't ask a question without someone questioning my honesty and integrity.

Young kids absorb easily. Start reading lots of books to him and taking him on educational trips.

Lol, boastful much?
I find it very hard to believe that a 3-year-old can recognise 6 digit numbers. My daughter is classified as 'high ability' in mathematics and at seven years old she can't do this.

I don't think he is gifted. My grandson is 2yrs 4 months and he can do most of that.
