I spilled a gallon of gas onto the floor of my new car. How do I get rid of the smell?

Two weeks ago a container of gasoline that I was transporting tipped over and 1 gallon poured onto the floor behind and under the driver's seat. I sponged it out before using a one gallon solution of Dawn detergent four times, scrubbing and rinsing. The last solution I left on the floor over night before rinsing and vacuuming almost dry. The smell remained. I've tries baking soda, vinegar, store bought odor destroyers by rid dry, air fresheners, charcoal, deodorizers and prayer. Nothing has eliminated the odor which is that of gas and everything I've tried combined. This is a new Ford Flex which I can't afford to trade in because I owe too much. Could this be an insurance claim? Any suggestions for odor removal?

Remove the driver's seat and rent a Rug Doctor. I bought one off of Ebay because of pet odor (from previous owner) and frequent rug shampooing. I bought a Ford Pickup that had mouse poop all over the carpet. Took out the smell and the stains. P.S. will probably be required several times. I did my truck carpets 3 times. Soak them deep. Yes, drying time is longer, but the gasoline soaked into the padding.

Possible to claim on insurance. However, it depends upon your deductible if it is worth your while to file a claim.

The gasoline has completely permeated the carpeting and padding underneath. The only real fix is to replace the carpeting. You may want to check with the Ford dealer to see how much new carpeting will cost.

You may also be able to find carpeting for this vehicle from a local auto salvage yard. The link below may be helpful. Most of the auto salvage yards in North America participate in an online database. The link below has the ability to search the inventory of most of the auto salvage yards in North America. Who knows, you might get lucky and find one the correct color. The going rate seems to be between $125 to $250.

If you are the least bit handy with tools you could change it out yourself and save some money. When you get the carpet out, wash the floor pan with soap and water. Be careful not to get any electronics wet. vacuum the water out with a wet / dry shop vac configured in the wet setting. Allow to dry thoroughly before installing the new carpeting.

Take the seats and carpet out, It may be easier to just replace the padding rather than clean it.

Clean the carpet more than once and hang it outside in the sun for a few days.

Clean the floor pan with detergent. Being a newer car the floor drain plugs are probably usable.

Ray hasthe right idea. You need to take the seat out and shampoo or steam the carpet. Otherwise just wait, it'll go away on its own but that will take weeks or maybe months.
