    You need a dictionary.

    ADDENDUM

"he is written about in other ancient documents separate from the bible"

So are Zeus and Apollonius of Tyana.

No, atheists don't believe "in" Jesus. In fact, there are some who would even argue that Jesus never existed. I'm personally indifferent on the subject since I do not believe that Bible god exists. It kind of makes Jesus irrelevant.

Obviously I don't believe that Jesus was divine. Whether there was an actual person who inspired the stories is unclear, but it seems unlikely given the similarities between the Jesus myth and earlier myths about Mithras, Krishna, Horus, etc. There are no independent historical accounts of his existence.

  • There are some atheists who believe he never existed. Some believe in him as a man who lived roughly 2,000 years ago. Since they don't believe in a god, they probably don't believe he was anything more than a guy with a moral philosophy who kick started a religion.

Not as a god/son of god.

Maybe as a crazy carpenter who lived 2000 years ago around which the myth of godly Jesus was built.

I used to think the Jesus character in the christian bible was based on an actual person or persons, minus the magic, but I no longer do.

there may have been a number of messiahs in the roman times that may have started some of the gospel stories, but the god like miracle maker is highly imaginative.

There is no belief, just lack of evidence.

Some do some don't, Christianity can be taken as a philosophy as well as a religion, no belief in a supreme being needed.

There may have been a man (human) named Jesus, but he was not a divine miracle worker.
