Well do not surprise him with shoes because that's like a guys prized possession is picking out Jordan's lol but buy him things from Hollister or Abercrombie. Those are the 'cool' stores trust me. All popular kids generally wear clothes from there. It will give him a good start. It doesn't really matter about the backpack. And get skinny or slim straight jeans, not boot cut. and don't get him loose shirts. Tight ones are better,

Middle School Style

Have him pick out the shoes because shoes are different than regular clothes. But get him elite mid calf socks, nike and under armor shirts, maybe a t-shirt of his favorite athlete, athletic shorts, and then get him either a good looking collared shirt or nice American Eagle t-shirt and khaki/cargo shorts for dances.

Wear narrow bottom pant,a cool shirt some good shoes and a hairstyle that suits on you.

Better to ask him and then take him shopping for the stuff with you. Every boy's taste and every boy's school is different as to what is good to wear. Believe me, he will appreciate it a LOT more if he has a say in what is bought!! : }
