Why is my new Subaru using oil?

I have a new 2013 Subaru Outback. At 7000km the low oil light illuminated meaning that it used more than a litre of oil. The recommended oil change interval is 10,000km. I also noticed that when it is started the first time for the day, the exhaust will be clear for 5 sec then blue for 15 seconds, then clear again. This is happening in warm weather. I have owned a lot of different vehicles and none of them showed any sign of using any oil between oil changes. This is freaking me out. Any suggestions as to what would cause this would be greatly appreciated.

There have been issues with some of the new FB25 4-cylinder engines using a lot of oil.

Your best place to work this problem will be the dealership.

You can look on some of the Outback forums for more owner experiences with this. It's not the particular model of Subaru but the engine itself that's having excessive oil consumption problems. There are reports of the 2013 Forester (and some earlier years) with the FB25 engine having the same issues.

Source(s): 2011 Forester owner with FB25 engine. No oil issues for me.

The engine wasn't broken in correctly, so now oil is getting into the combustion chamber. This could be valve seals or piston rings not sealing from a poor break in. Did you follow the recommended break-in (which is typically to not exceed 4000rpm for the first 1000 miles)? If so, that's part of the problem, that's an awful break-in.
