Plucking Dog's Ears?

I found a powder specially made for plucking dog ear hair and am gonna order it on Friday. Until then, is Johnson's baby pure cornstarch powder safe to use?

Yes, it's perfectly safe to use, however there is no need to "pluck" your dogs ears. I raised Miniature Schnauzers for over 20 years, and they have a tremendous amount of hair in their ears.

As a groomer, if you get a pair of baby scissors with blunt ends, you can simply cut the hair short without opening up the pores in the ears from plucking to infection and without causing a dog pain.

It should be okay, as long as there's not oil. But it will be safe, just may be hard to keep a grip on the hairs if it does have oil.

To the answerer who says plucking is not needed.. Yes, it is. I have seen many dogs (including schnauzers) who's ear hair has matted and it took a great deal of pain for the poor dogs to get it out of their ears. It is better to regularly pluck the ear hair so something like this doesn't happen, causing ear infections and even deafness.

  • Safe, but not effective. The point to ear powder is to enable you to get a better grip on the hairs. Cornstarch will be too slippery.

Remember when plucking ears to only pull a few hairs at a time.

It will be ok as long as there is no oil in the powder, baby powders usually contain oil. That will make your fingers slippy and you won't be able to pull the hairs, they will slip through your fingers.

Regular corn starch would be better, just a tiny amount.

30 yrs grooming (I know the powder you are getting and it works well.)
