  • Neurological issues with my Standard Poodle puppy?

A few weeks ago, I adopted a puppy knowing she had some unknown issues. Her, and her two sisters developed some issues all between 8-12 weeks old. A vet trip to the neurologist determined the issue is with the cerebellum, but only an MRI can find out specifically what. It could be anything from a bad case of vertigo, to a degenerative issue. For more details on her symptoms, see : http://kirathespoo.tumblr.com/kirassymptoms

I was wondering other's opinion on what it could be. Cerebellar Ataxia usually develops later in life, not this early. Cerebellar Hypoplasia sounds very similar, but after seeing videos, she isn't as dramatic as those other dogs - maybe a more mild version? Ear infection has been ruled out. She is a smart puppy who is trainable as any other dog I've had. She my have a hearing issue, but it may be a focus issue instead, which is commonly associated with cerebellem problems. She knows her name, so I know she is not deaf, she jut ignored me a lot - not like other dogs though, her ears don't even twitch.

  • I want to live in Canada, how?

From my research, it seems that the only way to become a citizen is marry a Canadian, have immediate Canadian family, or have a Master's degree in something worthwhile (Doctor, etc). I am marrying a non-canadian, I have no Canadian family, and a Master's degree isn't an option for me (though I don't like how these restrictions effect me, I actually greatly approve and think America needs to do the same thing).

What are my other options that involve getting out of the downfall of America? Maybe live in Canada, close to the border, and go to America for my healthcare? Or is this frowned upon? What other options do I have?

Excuse me for sounding naive, but there is only one way to learn :P

  • Horse Halter Measurements?

I am going to attempt to make a nylon horse halter. I have no access to horses at the moment, so I cannot get the measurements myself. the friend I am making it for has a Quarter Horse that fits in an 'average' size halter.

If anyone has a halter of that size and a ruler on hand, could you make some measurements for me? I need measurements in inches. thank you so much.

  • Tattoo Help, is this a bad idea?

I want to get a tattoo on both heels, one saying "Keep Calm", the other "Heels Down" (it's a horse thing, for you non-horsey people). My problem is I am a bagger at a grocery store. I am on my feet for 6-8 hours a day, have to wear close toed shoes, and do sweaty work the majority of my shift. Would this tattoo be a bad idea for now? Even when I get promoted, I still have to stand all day with close toed shoes, though the sweaty work will be erased.

Would it help if I wore extra thick socks, extra thin socks, wore bandaids over the tattoo, what?

  • Horse community in Washington state?

I will have enough money to move to washington soon, and my boyfriend and I are still discussing where we want to be specifically. Any place is good with a few stipulations.

The main one for me is the horse community. I want a place where there are options for lessons (mainly showjumping). I want a place where I dont have to drive a long way for competitions. I want a place where smaller horse properties aren't insanely expensive, or if they are, I want a few options for self care stables.

The other stipulations include a midsized town. I don't want all the confusing streets and traffic you get in bigtowns, though I can handle a large amount of people. But I don't want it to be a long drive from basic needs (grocery store, etc).

If anyone is familiar with Fort Mohave, AZ, that is about the setup I'm looking for (though I hate that town itself). A midsized town, zoned for horses, but not largely spaced out from neighbors. Grocery store, malls, etc. are within a 10 minute drive, and still kinda a horsey area.

  • Moving to another country - Where do I begin?

So, I am one of those "nutcases" who doesn't trust the government. I am looking into the idea of moving to another country permanently. Canada and England seem the most appealing, though I haven't done an extensive search yet.

What developed countries would be my best option? Amount of freedom, economy, etc. I am willing to learn another language if necessary, but I would prefer to move somewhere where English is the primary language. I am a certified dog groomer, and I completed 25% of my college to be a veterinary Technician. Honestly, I am happier with grooming, and making the same money, so I was considering stopping my college courses. If being a vet tech would make a country accepting me easier, I'll continue though.

What would I need to do to get started? Passports, documents, save a ton of money, etc. I'm assuming every country has different regulations, so if you have a country you would recommend, can you give me the info for that one?

Excuse me for being completely naive, but I have to start somewhere, right?

  • Mobile dog grooming conversion?

I am a certified groomer that has been working from my home since August. I planned on moving to from the beginning and the grooming is funding my move, while my normal minimum wage job payed my bills. Rather than opening a store, I was thinking of starting a mobile business. I can cover more area that way, and in my opinion, it is more convenient.

Grooming trailers run at about $20,000-30,000 and used they are not much cheaper. I was looking at some camping trailers which i can find for $1000-2000. They have a heating/cooling system and a bathtub. Would there be any problems with me gutting out most of it (like the kitchen and bed), and making it into a grooming van? I mean it has everything included that I would have difficulties putting together myself. I could give it a nice exterior paint job with my logo, you know?

The only thing is I haven't seen anything from my google searches about this, which makes me think no one does it for an obvious reason I am missing. What do you think?

    Dog adopting our new kitten?

We rescued a kitten about two weeks ago, we are not sure on it's age, but we are guessing it is now 7 weeks old. It showed no interest in milk replacer, but went at the kibble more than enthusiastically.

I have had my miniature dachshund for about 4 years now. She is not spayed, and has never had a litter. She has had no access to any mature males (we have one puppy who is too young to neuter, but plan on it once he drops).

Since yesterday, it appears my dog has adopted my kitten. Her nipples are swollen, and she is extremely protective of him. She has never been aggressive, but now I am the only one near the kitten. She lets him nurse, massages his belly, and eats his droppings.

Why is this? How long will it last? I had the kitten potty trained, but now he goes wherever he wants because 'mom' will clean it up.

  • Adopted dog, possibly AKC registered?

I rescued a dog recently, and after he gained weight and lost the matted fur, he appears to be exceptionally well put together. He isn't one of those backyard bred dogs, but appears to be bred by someone who knew what they were doing (conformation, temperment, etc).

Is there any way I could find out if he is registered with the AKC, like a hair sample or something? He would make a great agility dog, but I don't know of any unregistered classes for dogs. I have no knowledge of his previous homes, littermates, or parents.

  • Problem with designer dogs?

Why does everyone hate on them so much? I can understand a backyard bred, $2000 mutt being unreasonable, but what about well thought out crosses, who get all the care a quality purebred dog would? When you cross, it widens the gene pool, making genetic defects less common. I don't see how that could be bad.

Other than pricing, what is all he hate about?

  • Sick cat, what do you think is wrong?

So I live in a small town 120 miles from anywhere, with only one nearby vet. He is apparently too busy for me. I just need some help figuring out whats wrong, and ill try to figure out he rest from there.

Last month I adopted a kitten, maybe 4-6 months old. I do not know its history or anything. It hasn't had any shots, though I have an appointment for next week. She is an indoor cat, but got her first taste of freedom last night. We got her back after twenty minutes.

She was fine this morning, and I just came back from work an hour ago. She is being extra lovable, drooling excessively, refusing to clean herself, refusing water and treats, and her temperature feels the same as usual. I haven't seen any recent crap, but as of 6am, it looked normal.

What do you think it is?

  • Why do I need different blade sizes for dog grooming?

From the little I know, it seems like the blade sizes (#40 compared to #10) are to get different lengths of cuts, correct? If I am using guards to clip fur, then it shouldnt matter what blade size, right? I plan on trimming paws without guards, #10, being best for paws, should be the size I get, and I can just use guards to do anything else, right? Please correct me if I am wrong.

  • Which clippers are better?

In a professional sence, as in used at least once a day, what is better? Oster a6 vs. Andis 27370? Yes I do realise the blades should be replaced with heavy use, but I mean the clipper itself. Which one is quieter, vibrates less, lasts longest, goes the longest without heating up, etc. Thanks.

  • Professional grooming supplies?

I am starting to get my certificate for dog grooming and am looking to get some supplies. I already have an excellent set of clippers, given to me by my instructor. I also have good nail clippers and files and shampoos. I only have two brushes, one resembles a human paddle brush, and the other is a double coated deshedder. What are some other things I should get for grooming all types of dogs?

    Clipper + Guards

    Nail clipper and files

    Dog shampoo

    Flea/tick shampoo

Brushes and combs (explain what types I should get)

    Quick Stop

    Ear powder, for plucking hair

    Grooming table/arm/haunch strap

I'm sure I'm missing a few basics, what do you think? I am not going to get a specialty bathtub, and everything will be done at my house.

  • Most recognized Dressage competitions?

In America, other than the Olympics, what are the biggest name Dressage competitions (like the Triple Crown in racing, or Rolex Kentucky for Show Jumping, etc).

Also, what is the biggest name competition that is closest to central Utah?

  • Dressage in the Olympics?

Before you read - I know this is a far fetched dream, so don't be rude about how I will never be able to do it, and just answer the question.

How would someone go about representing America in the Olympics with Dressage? Pretend I was good enough, and it was only a matter of getting recognized. Are there "try outs" for the Olympics? How would I qualify for them if so?

Are there any specific competitions that I would be required to enter before I try to qualify for the Olympics? The entire thing confuses me. I know I still need a lot of work, but if I don't know which direction to go, I will never accomplish it.

    Thanks.

  • My dogs are hungry, please help.?

My dad left me home alone for a few days. A problem with my debit card took all my money (I will have it back on Monday), and we are out of dog food. What is something safe I can feed my three small dogs? It will only be until tomorrow night (they have eaten normal dry dog food up until this point).

Can I make them some white rice? What about certain types of cereals (like Rice Crispies, Honey Kix)? Maybe some hot dogs? I, as well as them, am almost out of food. Those seem to be the only logical choices (avoiding chocolaty things, other highly sweetened things, etc).

    Thanks.
