Is generalizing always bad?

When I talk to people online, especially on more sensitive topics one thing I always hear gripe about is that you shouldn't generalize I get responses like "not everyone is like that" or "that's a sweeping generalization you're being ignorant" so what am I supposed to do every time I say something about a certain group i have to say "I know not all of them are like that, I am completely aware that there are exceptions"

i say democrats want more gun control and the PC Police fly in and cry generalization!

Newsflash not everyone who generalizes actually thinks that stereotypes are 100 percent true 100 percent of the time.

Generalizing is a convenient and time-saving tool.

If you meet a lion and it chases you over a cliff with a hungry look in its eye, you might reasonably generalize that lions are dangerous predators and not to be approached. You don't need to treat each lion as a separate case.

Politics and gun control, everyone's different. All you can say about democrats is that most of them voted for a democrat candidate, unless you fall back on statistics and polls. They may not even agree with any of the party platform, they just think the alternative is worse.

Yeah, I think it is a mistake to generalize, and if we can avoid it do
