My exhaust sounds like it's blowing, will replacing the ignition leads solve the problem?

My exhaust started getting louder and louder a couple weeks ago now. It's sounding really loud now, especially in lower gears and speeds and when the engine is cold.

It sounds like it's blowing, I was going to take it to a garage but I had a quick look at the ignition leads and they are really worn.

It's a 2001 Hyundai coupe, apparently the OEM leads are really poor quality so I've ordered some new leads.

Will that have contributed to the loud sound? Or do I really need to get my exhaust looked at

Also what kind of price am I looking at if the exhaust is blowing, petrol consumption seems to have been quite badly affected

Update:

Got it done guys. The flexi pipe needed doing. Kwik Fit quoted be £135, independent garage did it for £90

    Are you serious?

If the exhaust is blowing you might as well hang a pair of furry dice off the mirror for all the difference it'll make.

The exhaust (or part of it) needs replaced, take it to a garage.

No, changing HT leads will have no effect on a blowing exhaust in the slightest. You need the exhaust section that is blowing replaced.

Take it to a couple of places for quotes as places like Kwik Fit will say you need an entire exhaust where a "decent" place will just replace the section saving you money.

Exhaust, for certain. Go to an exhaust specialist and get under the car when it is up on the lift.

NO. Ignition wires have nothing to do with an exhaust system leak. They're usually louder then the exhaust system contracts when they're cold.

It could be your engine, but you could have a hole in your exhaust. Best thing to do is take it to a well known garage, and take it to a few of them- because these days they lie and see if they all say the same thing. If its getting louder and eating up all your petrol you most likely have a hole in your exhaust, which isn't your fault it happens over time.
