Hi Alisha,
I'm currently using Acuvue Oasys (Hydraclear) prescription contact lenses. I've been using them for three years now (at a script of around -5.25, so don't you worry) and they are excellent. Since your eyes aren't that bad, you can opt for soft lenses as well.
Now, retail prices are going to vary from store to store, so you're going to need to shop around. My lenses are fortnightly and I've bought a year's worth, which cost me $130 (I got them during a sale, otherwise I would've paid about $200). The sweet thing about it is is that if your parents have got private health insurance, you may even be able to swipe off another $20 or more.

I really wouldn't recommend buying contact lenses from just any random store online; there is no assurance of quality or if the lenses are of the right script. Nevertheless, Amazon is selling Acuvue for $16.60 per box (they do want a script here, so perhaps it's not too bad.)

If you are going to wear your lenses for long periods of time, or you find that you have dry eyes, then you can also purchase some artificial tears to decrease the friction in your eyes. I use a brand called Bion Tears because I do have some allergies, and it works well. However my optometrist said that if not for my allergies, I could've gone with any store brand in pharmacies and the like.
Finally, please make sure you buy a decent lens cleaning fluid. There are far too many cheap brands out there that just don't do the job. I've found Opti-Free PureMoist to be really good for my eyes. I've used ReNu and BioTrue before, they made my eyes pretty scratchy even when I rubbed the lens (make sure you always, always rinse and rub your lenses when you clean them- putting them in fluid alone won't do the trick).
I hope that everything goes well! Welcome to the contact lens club ;)

If you don't have astigmatism then they are a lot cheaper. It does depend on type. there is no reason why your docs office is more expensive by the way. Mine isn't because I get everything there and they give me discount. I look at it occasionally but I get a lot of throwaway things liek checks if I have problems between checkups that make the whole package a better option.
I would have thought that if you don't have astigmatism then max would be £20.00 a month, but you need to check your perscription carefully to see there is no astigmatism on it.

I got my latest monthly contacts from an eye store (pearle vision) and it cost $200 for 12 sets of contacts that will last me a year. I checked online and I could get them cheaper - about $150.
