Can a car's fiberglass body rust?

Backed my car into a pole and scraped up the wheel well and rear bumper a bit. Took it to a autobody who quoted me 500 bucks for repair and said leaving it as it would cause rusting. Is that even possible? Also when I told him I could live with just painting over the scrapes he said it would rust regardless.

Update:

My mistake I drive an Accord, so i'm guessing it's abs plastic not fiberglass then.

The bumper on an Accord is plastic, but the "wheel well" (I'm guessing you mean quarter panel) is not, it is steel, and will certainly rust if you don't do something about it.

    You drive a Corvette?

That's the only production car I know of that is made of fiberglass!

To answer your question though, No, Fiberglass will not rust.
