What is the best name?
I'm writing a story about a girl in the DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) and I'm really obsessed with names, it has to have a good meaning, nickname, and sound right, and it has to have a good origin. Because Congolese people speak French, I looked up French names. These are the names I can't decide between:
-Nicolette (means Victory of the People)
-Noelle (means Day of Birth)
-Ciel (it just means sky in French)
So basically, the plot is about a girl in the DRC who has been taught to be really strong and not love or care for anyone (no disrespect to the DRC, it just happens to be set there). I wanted her name to reflect her loving people anyway, and I know these don't really.
-So which name do you like best, first?
-What is a good name (French or Congolese) that means like love, wanting to grow, etc?
-And BQ: What are good nicknames for Nicolette?

Ciel is the nicest name and the sky could suggest her aiming higher than what she's been taught.
Noelle is pretty but has no real meaning for the character.
Nicolette has the best meaning but isn't as pretty.
Annette means favour/grace. You could call her Annie or Netty.
Nicole, Nico, Cole, Lettie.

I'm like you, I'm obsessed with names so I literally spend hours on baby name websites to find the perfect name for characters in my stories. Btw, your story sounds cool :)
I think Ciel is the perfect fit, not just because it was one of your choices but because in general. There's this Hindu god named Krishna, and he's usually illustrated blue in color (his skin is blue), blue for the sky because the sky is infinite, just like Krishna and his love. (I'm not Hindu though, so I don't know the whole story). Not that your character is associated with that, but naming her Ciel is representing infinity like love, which is kind of what you wanted her to reflect.
I could only find Amorette that sort of fits your criteria: it means "little love" and is of French origin.
Nicolette: Nicole (nee-cole), Nicole (nee-coh-la), etc
Good luck! :)
