Your body maintains a reserve of calories in either fat tissue or muscle tissue. Just two pounds of muscle tissue can store the equivalent of 14 pounds of fat tissue, so of course, body building (resistance training) can help you create lean body mass that is desired by both men and women. I recommend that you find someone who can help you plan a resistance training program. My preference is free weight training since it's inexpensive and easy to do at home.
Since you are unlikely to want bulging muscles, it's best to avoid the whey protein and other protein drinks. Consumption of these dairy based products are also correlated with rapid body growth, early menses, and breast cancer. The optimal food choices for a young woman who wants lean muscles is the Whole Food, Plant Based (WFPB) diet. This avoids processed foods, excess oil, excess fat, excess salt, flavor enhancers, and other food additives. The WFPB diet includes legumes, whole grains, vegetables, and whole fruit. For more information about this way of eating, please see the web sites of one or more of the following nutrition researchers: Dean Ornish, Joel Fuhrman, Neal Barnard, T. Colin Campbell, or Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr.
Meat and dairy consumption is OK, however, Americans tend to eat these foods in large quantities at every meal. Consumption of these foods in excess are correlated with certain cancers, diabetes, and vascular disease.
