I'd like to get into football?

I've been left out of sports conversations, and it looks fun to watch once you figure everything out. Simple enough. OK, so far, I think that the basic premise of football is a convoluted version of running a ball 10 yards, and you pass it to other guys and try to avoid the other team getting you. I don't know the positions and what they do yet, so please help me with that. I'm also wondering, what's the best night to watch football? If you can help me with this simple questions, I'd like to say thank you.

I would suggest going to the library and finding a book on football that interests you. Then I suggest you watch college football on Saturdays. Watching the NFL is fun too especially when you find a player that you really like to watch...(Dez Bryant on the Dallas Cowboys is my fav) but just keep watching and reading and you will catch on in no time. The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy yourself. Hope you find a great team that you get interested in. I LOVE watching the Texas AGGIES and the Dallas Cowboys...I am a texas girl so those are games that I love!! I don't know what all the positions are still and I have watched football ever since junior high but I truly enjoy it and it really doesnt' matter that I cant tell a tight end from a cornerback...LOL!!

Saturday in my opinion. Prepare for a long lecture from me. (Big football fan)

    Offense:

    1. Quarterback - Tells the center to hike the ball. If it's a running play, he hands the ball off to the halfback, if it's a pass, he holds it and looks for an open receiver. If it's a Play Action, he fakes a hand-off to the halfback, and keeps the ball to fool the defense.

    2. Running Back (Half Back) - The player usually positioned behind the Quarterback. He either runs the ball when it gets handed off to him, or he blocks for the Quarterback. The Running Back, can also go out for passes if the play calls for it.

    3. Tight End - These players are also on the line of scrimmage along with offensive linemen. Except they can go out for passes as well, or block for the Quarterback

    4. Wide Receivers - These players are usually far out to the left or right on the offense, and run routes depending on the play. Their job is to catch the ball when it is passed to them, and pick up as many yards as possible.

    5. Offensive Lineman - The men lined up beside each other in the three point stance. Their job is to block the incoming defenders and/or open holes for running lanes. (Holes for the running back to run through)

    6. Center - The center is the lineman in the middle with his hand on the ball. He hikes the ball to the Quarterback when told to do so by the command "Hike!" (Maybe "hut", a stomp, or a clap, depending on the team).

    Defense:

    1. Defensive Lineman - The men running into the offensive linemen attempting to tackle the person with the ball.

2.Line Backer - Usually just behind the defensive linemen, they can either drop back into coverage, or come in with the lineman to tackle the person with the ball, when Line Backers attempt to tackle the Quarterback when he is passing(sacking the quarterback) it is called a "blitz".

    3. Corner Back - These are the men usually standing in front of the Wide Receivers that prevent the receiver from being "open". Their job is to cover the wide receiver, and when the ball is passed they are to either slap it away, or catch it themselves, which is known as an "interception".

Safeties - Free Safety, and Strong Safety. These players are the ones far in the back of the field, they are to watch for deep passes or anything coming through their coverage zone. (The spots they are watching)

I am aware that there is a lot more to this sport than what I had mentioned, but these are just some brief basics. You should try Youtube for a better explanation.

Source(s): I am a HUGE football fan. I talk about football when it's basketball season.

You need to start watching games with friends that love football.. You'll learn from them as well as from watching yourself.. Start reading about teams on their websites, watch sports shows, to learn the rules and get a better perspective of the game you can go to American football at Wikipedia as well.. There's tons of information there... Good luck....
