Art Teacher Professor Question?

Hello, I am in a Painting class with a professor that thinks my art is not really appealing, she said it was nice stuff but not enough to do painting, she still let me in with skipping the pre-requisites which is very nice. This is my 2nd semester in college too. Here is my art and hers. Hers is on the left mostly mine is on the right. I did the girls, the river trees, and the purple eye. I am mind confused and she paints like this? Is she doing a good thing by pushing me because I have potential? Or she just doesn't jive with me at all http://www.flickr.com/photos/45043194@N02/96752567...

first things first. WHY do you think she's teaching in the first place LOL.

always take what ANYbody says with a large dose of salt. the good teacher OR artist will never lead you. his/her job is to merely open doors...what you do beyond that is your choice. however, be aware that even good artists and teachers have their own biases, whether intentionally or not and will show you what THEY think is good

part of learning art is knowing about yourself. you have to trust your gut judgement and be able to separate the good advice from the bs. your gut will tell you. your gut has ALREADY told you or else you wouldn't be asking any questions or expressing doubts here. her job IS to push you, but her job is NOT to lead you. so when you listen to her you have to get where she's coming from, and either take it or leave it.

the only difference between you and your teacher is your teacher has been around long enough to establish a style for herself. it's not a good style but it's her identity. you're not at that point but you shouldn't be anyway...you should be exploring unless you already have a definite sense of self.

and if i may,,,that eye drawing is nothing like your other stuff.

She definitely likes you if she's letting you get away with things. She sees potential but you're kind of all over the place. I'm am artist myself but my style of art is apocalyptic war, dark self portraits/portraits, and more darker realism. Pick your style, not just things you pick off the Internet. Be creative! Or like my hippie art teacher used to tell me 'Take that picture, put your own twist, and make it your *****.'
