Is it possible to become a usmcr pilot without ever being an active duty serviceman?

Of course this is excluding training/flight school ECT where you ARE considered AD.

    most reserve pilots are former AD ones who made the transition to Reserves. there is almost no opportunity to be selected for an aviation slot off the street in the Reserves

    No, while doing all training & schooling, up to and including your flight training, you are on "Active Duty".

    The great majority of new pilots are kids who enter straight out of college...not from enlisted members already in
