Can someone who has been in the Army tell me what it was like?
Im thinking about joining the Army reserves for help with college but, from what I understand, I need to enlist for 6 years to qualify for the 20,000 enlistment bonus. So I'm weighing the pros and cons and trying to decide if its worth that huge commitment. Also im very scared of heights, how would that factor in? Any thing anyone could tell whos actually been there (boot camp, basic combat training, or whatever its called) would be appreciated. Thanks.
One more thing, its not the physical training im worried about its my fear of heights plus a significant amount of time out of my life.
So can you tell me what it was like then?

Heights will be an issue, don't apply for an airborne unit obviously. Within your first few weeks of basic you'll have to do the confidence course to overcome fear of heights. There are 3 or 4 obstacle courses you do in basic, all require climbing. Sometimes you have to climb a 50' wooden wall, or climb a cargo net, or rappel.
You might want to look at the other forces if just going for the $$$. Life sucks as an Army E-1. Like being treated like a little kid all the time.

Once you get past BCT and AIT, you'll only be doing one weekend a month and two weeks out of a year in Reserves. I initially joined the Army Reserves and hated my unit because I wasn't doing what I was trained for (medic) and it's easy to get soft being a reservist. I switched over to active duty and never regretted it.
I didn't like heights either, but I did what I had to do or I wouldn't have passed BCT. It's either that or be recycled which means doing BCT over again.
Rank in the reserves is slow. I didn't get E-2 until I went active duty and that was about nine months later. It sucks to be an E-1. I never got any bonuses either.
I joined because I wanted to not because of any money. I was already making more money working for the federal government. If you're only in it for the money, you probably won't like it. Then again, you'll be in the Reserves and it won't be a day-to-day job unless you get deployed.

6 years of Reserve duty...for a $20K freaking grand bonus...boo-f*cking-hoo
After basic and AIT that equates to 234 days of actual duty (39 days a year)
25 years in the US Army so far...the ONLY bonus I ever got was my first reenlistment..for $1500.00

For one thing, you'll get a full understanding of the expression ''hurry up and wait.''
