How much do nannies get paid (in Canada)?
We are in the process of hiring a nanny/caregiver for our kids. If you can tell me how much you pay your nanny and what services they provide (i.e. some do household chores as well), it would be much appreciated.
Also, does it depend on how many kids you have?
Thank you.

this is a very difficult question to answer because it depends on so many factors
- how many children
- ages of children
- do any of the children have medical problems or behavioral problem that require special attention
- do you have to take care of any pets
- how much housework to do
- any meal preparation
- does the nanny live in the home 24/7 or just weekdays and leaves on weekends
- does she work regular hours during the morning and afternoon or also weekends or all or some evenings, whether she lives in or out
- if you live in rural area, how can they get to your home, do they own a vehicle, are they required to
- does the nanny have any special training that is valuable such as early childhood education degree, CPR, First Aid, etc.
- what special skills does the nanny have that you wish to utilize, such as she speak a second language or plays a musical instrument that you would like her to teach your children
- how much experience does she have/what is her age
- what is your income and how much can you afford to pay her
- if it's a live-in position, you will have to factor in the cost of room and board
- you should pay for any special training, CPR courses, you expect her to have if she does not already have these
in my search for nanny work in both the States and Canada, the salary offered ranged significantly, and it was mostly because the parents were very poor or very wealthy
one family in Canada paid me $100/week (including room and board for five days a week - i left on weekends)) to work five days a week, up to 11 hours a day, which was underpaid for sure but i needed the job at the time
two kids, one with special needs, had to prepare two meals a day, no other housework expected, thought i did some anyway
i applied for and didn't get another job by a very wealthy businessman who was going to pay me $250 a week, including room and board and only 6 hours, housework, no meal prep, five days a week
another family in the States paid me $300 (including room and board for seven days a week) a week for half the hours so it was very generous - housework or meal prep, but they wanted me to teach their two kids to play piano when i had the spare time, wither during or after work hours, and i had use of the family vehicle to drive from Connecticut to New York City on my free time
it's a case by case situation, you will have to have a proper discussion with the nanny to be so there are no unpleasant surprises for you or her
for example, i was told i was going to be working four eight-hour days a week for $100/wk but they did the old bait and switch once they had me get rid of my apartment and uproot myself and then expected me to work much longer hours five days a week for only $75/wk
keep in mind you are entrusting a stranger with your most precious belongings in the whole world, so how much are your children worth
the better you treat your nanny, the more enthusiastic she will be about taking care of your children
if you expect your nanny to do housework and/or take care of a pet or pets, you will have to pay them more, same goes if they have to pick up/drop off kids at school or other activities
make sure you contact Revenue Canada and get a tax/employee number
you will have to learn to do up a t4 slip once a year and do deductions for each pay check, etc.
don't pay a nanny under the table because you may get caught and she will have to pay back taxes and you may get in trouble too

In addition to that thoughtful answer above, you may find more information through this site, http://www.nanniesontheblock.ca./ It's a nanny Canada services site where employers can find applicants and vice versa.

It depends, are you going through an agency or by yourself? It can range from 10 dollars an hour to 100 dollars, it just depends on how much they agree to pay you.
