Faecal impaction or just constipation?
For the past week or so I haven't been able to have proper bowel movements. When I do manage to go to the bathroom, the faeces are very small. Also it doesn't feel like my colon is contracting. I don't have the urge to have a bowel movement. It's like a plug is there stopping much from coming out, no matter how hard I push and strain, nothing happens.
I'm very bloated and I'm having abdominal cramps. I feel like there is a mass in my colon but I can't feel anything when I press my tummy. I'm very uncomfortable. I took two Senokot tablets last night and nothing.
I'm currently being tested for Coeliacs disease and I've been having mucus in my bowel movements for almost a year (my GP thinks that this could be related to Coeliacs as I feel ill after I eat gluten and I'm also anaemic and Vitamin D deficient.)
I feel so stupid going to the GP if I just have a bad case of constipation and I'm so embarrassed. I'm 26 and have a whole host of other health problems and feel like I live at the GP surgery.
Does what I have sound just like constipation or could it be faecal impaction? And if I am impacted, should I still be eating?!
Thank you in advance,

It could be related to coeliac disease, if you have it - it can cause constipation OR diarrhea, mucus in bowel movements, all sorts of fun stuff.
Constipation can feel like you describe. It can build up in a mass that's hard to eliminate, and to tell you truly, it can be pretty bad when the time comes because it can be overly large and hurt like mad. I had undiagnosed celiac disease and this happened to me when I was pregnant - might not be the same thing, but similar sounding symptoms.
One thing to check - are the feces that come out hard, or just small? Like, hard little pieces/balls almost? Or normal feces that you just aren't getting out more than a tiny bit? If it is NOT hard, I would honestly go to the doctor ASAP, yeah. There could be something going on that needs attention.
If the feces IS hard, then there are a few things you can do that might help, although neither is terribly pleasant.
The first is to get a glycerin suppository - the pharmacist's should have this. It is designed to add a slippery and irritating substance to the bowels to help initiate going to the bathroom. For those with major constipation, however, I think it's good in some ways because of the slippery aspect alone - with the dry, hard stools, they don't move along well at all, and this can help just a little.
Second, I would check out something called magnesium citrate. It's a liquid laxative, usually cheap, can be purchased over the counter. It tastes like an extremely sour bottle of soda, and typically, one whole bottle is one dose. It works, but the cramping can be intense.
My child with celiac disease had constipation and the doctor suspected a stretched colon - less than an impaction, but where a hard mass of feces builds up. Magnesium citrate is what he recommended and it absolutely worked. Instructions for use are on the bottle. You may need to ask a pharmacist about it - this is what it is called in the USA, but there may be another name for this in other countries.
The colon feeling like it's not contracting sounds a bit like a stretch colon to me, honestly, but that may be because I've met mothers recently with children who have this. From what I understand, the stretched colon can lead to an impaction, eventually.
Also, re: your coeliac test - if it's negative, I would highly HIGHLY recommend that you try a strict, avoiding gluten AND gluten contamination diet as a trial afterward. The coeliac tests have a 20% false negative rate, some sometimes you can be missed. On top of that, gluten intolerance HAS no test aside from an elimination diet, so the coeliac test won't detect it. However, many gluten intolerant folks report very similar symptoms to coeliac disease. Whether that means many gluten intolerant folks are undiagnosed coeliacs, I couldn't say, but I'll admit that I do wonder!
And secondly, if you do have coeliac disease? What your doctor should tell you - but may not because sadly, many of them aren't aware of this - experts recommend that all close relatives of a coeliac get tested for it, too. 1 in 22 of them will ALSO have the disease. And if they test negative, it's recommended that they get retested every 2-5 years, because the disease can do damage for years before there are any outward symptoms.
Wishing you well - with phrases like 'a whole host of other health problems,' you sound like a prime candidate to have the disease. What many people don't understand is that coeliac disease will give your entire body problems, so most of us have our entire bodies going haywire on us and falling apart.

I would not be surprised if you find some of yours in there. Good luck in feeling better!

Get some milk of magnesia and follow the instructions on the bottle. In two or three hours, your problem will be solved. Don't take more or less than recommended. I've tried both. First I tried taking less, so I could just ease it out. Nothing happened. Another time I drank it straight from the bottle without even turning the light on. Later I woke up and ran for the toilet nearby. I didn't make it. I was a human fountain. The good news is I cleaned up the mess before anybody else saw it.

Try a laxative, that way it will come out in all liquid, and you can poop a lot more out. But a laxative will cause some cramp. But when you poop, you will feel great.
