Can I take iron supplements when i'm not anemic?

I want to take them when I have my periods as they are VERY heavy. The doctor said i need to eat iron filled food when i'm on it to try and prevent anemia but i don't really. So basically can I take them when i don't have anemia or will it make me ill?

Yes you should take iron supplements. Many girls take them due to heavy periods to replace the iron lost from their body by excessive bleeding. It wont make you ill, iron is an important nutrient and your body needs it. Or else you could wait til you get anaemia which is a life threatening disease and then wish you took them sooner, your choice
