Spencer tried to apply the ideas put forward by Darwin in The Origin of Species to the social sciences. This led to the concept of 'social Darwinism' in which it was believed those with talent/skills/abilities would rise to the top of society. Thus those who were impoverished were seen as 'less deserving' than others.
