Why are old tv shows bad quality on my LED TV?
I have a new Samsung LED TV it's great on new shows, but on old shows it shows light trails when people move. Is something wrong with the TV? Is there a setting I need to change for shows that are not HDTV compatible? or not digital?

From the digging I have done, the key is motion blur happening only when viewing 480i sources. For those who didn't catch it - the poster is having basically a motion blur/ghosting issue with SD sources - not just the typical poor picture quality.
We don't know the settings options or specs on this set, but it may be a 120Hz set and have a motion smoothing setting in the video menu that may correct this.. or be causing it.
I'd check the video menu for any settings that would control deal with smoothing motion. Samsung calls this feature "Motion Plus" - check this setting and experiment with the options.

Old shows of course were shot with older technologies which are not future proof. Also they were shot in lower resolutions & different aspect ratios, 480p @ 4:3 vs 720p/1080p @ 16:9.
Its just the reality of the situation. Some are remastered for HDTVs but most are left as they were.

It was a different time. If you never owned a CRT then the explanation wouldn't make sense
