"I think by far the most important bill in our whole code is that for the diffusion of knowledge among the people. No other sure foundation can be devised, for the preservation of freedom and happiness...Preach, my dear Sir, a crusade against ignorance; establish & improve the law for educating the common people. Let our countrymen know that the people alone can protect us against these evils [tyranny, oppression, etc.] and that the tax which will be paid for this purpose is not more than the thousandth part of what will be paid to kings, priests and nobles who will rise up among us if we leave the people in ignorance." - Thos. Jefferson

"Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness. The more of it one has the more one wants." Benj. Franklin

"He that would make his own liberty secure, must guard even his enemy from oppression; for if he violates this duty, he establishes a precedent that will reach to himself." - Thomas Paine

"The fundamental law of the militia is, that it be created, directed and commanded by the laws, and ever for the support of the laws." - John Adams

The Founders were practical men, not mere ideologues. We should never deify them, for they would not have enjoyed that prospect. We should seek only to fulfill in our lives the best notions they created, if we would do any service to their creativity.

Yes, but our nation is much weaker now, and we are forced into an extreme form of tolerance. We are essentially being forced into always siding with the minority or we are considered racist, sexist, bigoted, or homophobic. People used to have a backbone but those days are long gone.
