I have problems with my OCR scanner?

I have a Brother MFC-4510DW. I want to figure out how to get the OCR scanner to work. The printer isn't pre-set to work, so don't tell me it is. When I attempt to use the OCR scanner, it says "Check connection". The printer is connected to the network and so is the computer that the document will go to.

If it is possible, is there software that will allow me to use the scanner without using Brother's crap software.

Update:

The scanner doesn't work on any option. Also the user manual doesn't explain how to set it up or get it to work. It explains how to use it. Why don you read the ******* manual before giving me advice.

Your best bet is to go in control panel and click on Scanners and Cameras. You can install it using a generic driver. Secondly, you can use Corel, InDesign, and other graphic program. They come with a generic driver that will work with your scanner. All you will need is the proper driver and you are set.

After that, you can download FreeOCR and open your scanned jpeg images in it and the program will OCR them at the click of the mouse.

You may want to consider a software download direct from Brother

Just select your operating system and download Brother's latest drivers

try scanning the images not OCR and check whether you can use the scanning function of the printer

Read the section in the user guide / manual for OCR scanning.
