My wife owes money to the government how does this effect my taxes?

I recently got married on August 10th 20013. My wife owes student loans to the government. The government has been taking her tax return for the past few years. If I claim my wife on my taxes can the government take my tax return? Furthermore due to our marriage can the government take my tax return because of her debt? I do want to pay back the loans but I don't want to have the tax return stripped away. There are things we need to buy before uncle sam gets his due. Can any body help me with this tax conundrum?

If you file your taxes jointly, they will keep any and all tax refunds until the debt is paid.

So . . . you need to just go and pay your bill.

I would imagine that if you file a joint return that they will continue to withhold any refunds due. Excuse me but when you married your wife you married her baggage as well and the US government (which means us taxpayers) should get their due before you use the money to buy extras in your lives.

You took on a debt when you married - pay it back and then you can use those refunds on high ticket items which you want - not need - there's a difference.
