To many southern whites, the "Old South" or Antebellum Era represents the memories of a time of prosperity, social order, and "gracious living." They had no desire to change.

I'm not crazy about any of these answers, but 3 seems the best. If they did see a need to "reform," they probably wouldn't have seceded from the Union, right?
Edit: I doubt that "most" Southern whites were beginning to oppose slavery. Most whites didn't even own slaves--you needed to be rich for that--but the felt they had the right to do so (the Constitution allowed it) and were willing, 20 years later, to kill and be killed for that right.
