Buick Roadmaster or Chevy Caprice?

Hello, i really need a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc.. opinions on my decision of purchase. I've narrowed it down to 2 vehicles: 95 Buick Roadmaster with an LT1 126, xxx and clean as hell and 94 Caprice with 4.3 V-8 and 150, xxx and clean as hell. Which would you guys get according to reliability, durability, mpg's, etc. They both were from old couples who just want to "upgrade" to newer vehicles and not one of any of their kids would be "caught dead" driving them. The Buick goes for 1600 and the Caprice 1495; man i sure do miss that big rear wheel drive luxury feel...

While being virtually identical, there is one problem with 94 and 95 GM vehicles. They are difficult to diagnose. These cars are like Malcolm in the Middle. To young and too old at the same time. Unless you want to spend a lot of money every time they break down and guess why they just stopped working, you or you mechanic would have to have a Scan Tool.

I found this out just recently when I was trying to trouble shoot my 95 S-10's intermittent knocking. I know that it is not OBD2 compatible but I know about jumpering the wires in the ALDL connector to read the "Check Engine" light for codes. I had to get out my trusty oscilloscope and volt meter to find that the knock sensor had a crack in it. (Big surprise, knock sensor causing intermittent knocking). Just keep that in mind on 94 and 94 GM vehicles. I am surprised that many people have not jumped my sh!t about this fact.

I am with you I think the old RWD vehicles ride the best. And like you found out you can get an awesome example with low miles for dirt cheap. If the poor mileage doesn't bother you they are an excellent choice. I would pick the Road Master for the reasons JetDoc gave. I started liking the big cars when I bought a Crown Vic then a Lincoln Town Car and finally a Mercedes S class.

    What PatrickC says is TROOF.

94-95 models use what is called OBD 1.5.

It is a bastard mix of...you guessed it...OBD 1 and OBD 2. You have to use an OBD1 scanner and an OBD 2 adapter to read codes. No more pin jumping stuff. Heck, on cars that old and with an LT1 under the hood (or the baby LT1, the L99 4.3L v8) and dealing with optispark, you'll need one.

Get a 96 model of either car if you can.

I passed on a 95 Buick Riviera with a supercharged 3800 because of that nonsense.

They are basically the same, along with the Olds Custom Cruiser wagon. it's mostly trim, badging, and some other cosmetic differences. Also, the buick came with the LT1 engine after '94, which I don't think the other ones came with. Pretty much any mechanical or interior pieces will cross over to the other cars though.

Actually, they're pretty much the same car, built on the same chassis by the same corporation (General Motors). I'd go with the Buick only because it is more likely to have the luxury options that people who buy that kind of car look for, and it's got a few less miles on it.

Well if your going to worry about MPG, then you just need to leave both of those cars alone. Neither one was built with MPG in mind. Both are gas hogs just because of the 70 feet & 3 tons of scrap metal your driving. I would say no on both just for the age & either go old school like 60-70's era

Caprice there just better cars easier to find parts for if it breaks down both cars are gonna be the same on mpg or close to it

Gas mileage bad? I've read that for their size and weight that the LT1's get 24 mpg on the highway.
