Poor literacy and numeracy: what is going on?

Out of 24 countries, England's 16 to 24-year-olds have come 22nd and 21st for literacy and numeracy respectively, according to an OECD study:

After so many years of government tinkering and interfering with the educational system, driving many a teacher to the edge of madness, this is the end result. All those targets, all that rhetoric, all that MONEY, and we have a generation whose poor knowledge and skills bring shame to our nation. How on earth was this allowed to happen?

Too many children with no English and no social skills are holding back tens of thousands of british children.

The lie that Pakistani kids do better than white kids is just that...a lie.

Many have no English, speak no English at home, spend hours at the mosque every night, have no ambition to be anything more exciting than a taxi driver and are often unruly and disruptive....they see the discipline in english schools as soft compared to schools in Pakistan and the regimes of the mosque.

Too much time is spent by teachers on these children....they make up the majority of focus groups in schools where extra resources are put in to try to bring them up to speed.

Many take extended holidays to Pakistan and this has a detrimental effect on any progress they have made.

The fantasy that having lots of languages being spoken in a school is just that....a fantasy,

Interpreters are required for parents evenings. Integration assistants are employed ahead if teaching assistants. Money is poured down the drain.

Don't believe a word about the marvellous results of these ghetto schools.....the truth is that they fail the English kids at the expense if trying to integrate the foreign non English speakers.

During the 1980s kids were supported at centres where they were helped to learn the basics of English ( and how to use a toilet) before they were set loose in schools. That stopped during the labour years where schools just had to accept all and sundry at a rate beyond anyone's ability to cope. Results have obviously suffered.

What did labour do? Massage the figures, dumb down exams and pretend everyone was doing well.

    Edit

There are special triggers that can generate an ofsted if too many are missed.....one of those is the progress of Pakistani pupils, another those on free school meals, special needs.....and see why so much effort is put into trying to drag up failing minority kids at the expense of non minority kids.

Source(s): Large numbers of black and Asian kids are excluded....poor behaviour and bad attitudes. White boys too are suffering....let down because they are not a target group deserving of additional support. Many failing children have parents who failed at school. They do not see education as important and do not support their kids. Millions upon millions has been poured into schools with high ethnic minorities while poor white areas have been systematically ignored for decades. The immigrant vote was more reliable it seems.

If they concentrated on the three 'Rs' a little instead of the three amigo politics of the meddling LibLabCON, if they left it alone a little instead of pointless tinkering around the edges. If they stopped importing 400,000 people including kids every year that can't even speak or write English. They might not need to waste recouces on 16 interpreters in inner city schools. Also, Grammer schools reintroduction might swing the balance a little and climb us back up the league tables where we used to be.

Another reason NOT to vote for the dumbed down schools and preceding failed politics of the LibLabCON.

The same answer as 20th century foxy. It doesn't take a genius to work out why education has gone down the pan in this country.

Hugo's new mum has hit the problem right on the nail!! Ever heard of special toilets in schools having to be built as muslim kids do not sit down to go to the toilet but stand. I know a girl who cleaned at a junior school and the toilets were filthy with excrement because of this habit. Her retort that 'get the mothers in to clean up their kids filth' did not go down too well with the headmaster! Filthy little brats.

Mass immigration, half a million foreigners a year are bound to skew the figures.

It causes problems with all public services and is sending us as a nation down the toilet of history.

Sorry this is not the self blaming PC answer you may have been expecting but I am not PC because I hate bullshit.

Put it down to all the left wing trendy teachers with their modern methods like phonetic spelling etc. There was nothing wrong with the way Grandad was taught, why play around with that which worked. Also I believe that our children are being held back by the needs of immigrant children, but we can't say that or it's racist.

If you don't mind having a good look at my earlier question - Tristram Hunt and the Ostrich - i'd be very much obliged. Unfortunately a couple are still trying to lay the blame for the educational wastage in this country at the doors of anyone other than those who have almost succeeded in their mission to dumb down this country - the labour or even THE NEW LABOUR party!

They lowered the pass criteria in all exams to try and make all pupils equal, therefore destroying the aspirations of hundreds of thousands each year as the dumbed down results passed through into the Universities. Our youngsters could pass an exam with a grade G and if they failed at that could resit within days until they achieved a grade.

Having three offspring and also having volunteered within the education/business sector I was allowed to see the exam papers set year by year as they had a distinct relevance to employment.

Year after year they appeared to be worse and there is absolutely no surprise in seeing how many youngsters passed with grades high enough to go to University. We were offering well paid employment to 18 year old's who wanted to earn and learn - we used the MOL for their distance learning degrees and had many youngsters successfully pass through our hands without debt, with savings, some stayed with us but just as I did as a youngster some moved on through the industry.

Two of them are now directors of national companies, others have formed their own companies.

We only ever took the cream, it used to horrify and really upset me that so many of them could not add up a column of figures or work out the VAT rate on an item - at 18 - without a calculator and how many of them could not spell and didn't rate punctuation - what on earth would happen if the power was ever cut off during their working day?

Needless to say the results continued on their downward spiral and all the time Labour were dragging our country further into European control and opening our borders.

Today we see the end result - possibly the worst educated in Europe - why?

Dumbed down so that we can't argue back? Dumbed down so that our youngsters realise they have the lowest rung on the European ladder? Dumbed down so that we will never resist the rise of the one country who still has a determination to rule Europe and who has broken the financial spines of so many others including Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy and yes - France - again! When will the French realise that? Not for as long as they have stupid people like Hollande, Sarkozy and his trollop of a wife! I have another home in Germany, did business there for over thirty years and have many very close German friends - none of them would disagree with what i'm saying on here.

No, i'm not a member of UKIP, I will however be voting for them next year and my MP and David Cameron know that. I'm not on my own in the greater York area, Julian Sturdy is in trouble and he knows it. We were sickened by the wastage of 13 years of Blair and Brown with their horrendous crew - everything I ever said on here about those years has come out in the revelatory books by sycophantic and deluded ex Labourites.

The education of most of those children has been compromised by self-seeking plebs, more concerned with their political position, pension, allowances and London life than their constituents concerns.

How can the MP's in Lincolnshire even think about canvassing for votes when you look at what unrestricted immigration has done to their schools and hospitals - never mind the social housing and benefits! Mind you, that must have helped a few labourites increase their bonus's!

Unfortunately David Cameron is not allowing the grass roots Conservative MP's to say it as it is and he's therefore just as much an Ostrich as Tristram Hunt. If he won't change - we will just have to swap him for someone more acceptable and amenable to our very real concerns.

lord.. bugger forgot his name. >rogers<, some say the best architect of the 20-21st century. (I don't i think his buildings are rubbish) can't read or write.. I was amazed.. but yeah..

the duty of education is to unlock human potential everything else is secondary. the modern school system failed hitler, prince william and his mother..

as for sums.. ever seen unemployed dole scroungers playing darts.. the speed they work out mental calculations to achieve a score result is a wonder to behold..
