  • What's Mandarin for "take away"?

As in, "I want to take the food I have ordered out of the fast-food outlet and bring it home with me, so don't put it on a tray in the expectation that I'll have to stay here and eat it on site."

  • Is it normally this expensive to rent in China?

I've been offered a job in Ningbo, which I accepted. I was then told that renting there is 2000-3000 RMB per month. They said that 4 months' payment must be made up front, in cash, amounting to a minimum 8000 RMB. Is this standard? That's more than £800, a lot of money to be carrying around anywhere, let alone a foreign land!

  • Should I accept this job offer?

I was offered a job teaching in China in August, to start in September. I accepted and sent back a signed contract by e-mail. However, the employer has been sloppy in sorting out the paperwork. I was supposed to receive the work permit and invitation letter last month but it still has not arrived. My life has been put on hold. Since then, I have received another offer working in Italy. Should I accept the second job instead? Italy's a lot nearer and cheaper to get to, plus I don't require a visa. It's a more attractive option to my mind.

  • How long does it take for post to get from China to UK?

I'm expecting a work permit to arrive which was allegedly posted on the 27th September. They haven't yet, but I recall ordering a shirt from an eBay seller this year and receiving it within days of making payment. Am I right to be concerned?

  • "You can sell but you cannot buy." Have the ruling classes lost the plot?

A cross-party report concludes that Britain should adopt the 'Nordic Model' of law enforcement regarding prostitution. That is, allow prostitutes to ply their trade but criminalise their customers. Amid all the sanctimonious rhetoric, these politicians have conveniently overlooked the fact that prostitutes need those very customers if they want to pay the bills. The Nordic Model has forced the profession further underground in Scandinavia and disempowered many prostitutes, who now have less time to vet their clients. It has not transformed them into doctors and lawyers, made them safer or removed the social stigma of their trade.

The hypocrisy of MPs is rather sickening. They talk of protecting women but underneath lies a puritanical hatred of the lower classes and a profound social snobbery. If this law were put on the statute book in Britain, working girls (and boys, come to that) would be no better off than before. Who voted for these clueless wonders?

  • Dragon Age 2: To Catch A Thief quest?

I'm in Act 2 of Dragon Age 2. I've started a romance with Isabella. I've completed the quest Following the Qun and Questioning Beliefs. My current main quests are Demands of the Qun and Offered & Lost. Friendship rating with Isabella is 100%. According to every guide that's ever been written about this game, the quest To Catch A Thief is supposed to trigger at some point during Act 2. So where is it? Why has nothing happened?

  • Poor literacy and numeracy: what is going on?

Out of 24 countries, England's 16 to 24-year-olds have come 22nd and 21st for literacy and numeracy respectively, according to an OECD study:

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-24433320

After so many years of government tinkering and interfering with the educational system, driving many a teacher to the edge of madness, this is the end result. All those targets, all that rhetoric, all that MONEY, and we have a generation whose poor knowledge and skills bring shame to our nation. How on earth was this allowed to happen?

  • Was religious education taught well in your school?

More than half of English schools are failing pupils in religious education teaching, according to Ofsted.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-24399813

I enjoyed the subject when I was a lad, but I remember only too well how second-rate the standard of teaching was. Most of us saw the subject as a doss. How would you improve our theological understanding?

  • Tax credits application help?

I have recently landed a job through an employment agency. Under 'employer's name' on page 6 of the tax credits claim form, do I put the name of the agency (whose name features on my payslip) or do I put my place of work, who are ultimately the ones paying me?

  • Must we have knee-jerk draconian legislation every time something bad happens?

Home Secretary Theresa May has outlined a raft of measures to deal with extremist groups following the murder of Lee Rigby. These include heavier policing of the Internet and a 'snoopers charter'. More details here:

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2013/may/26/woolwich-...

The thing is, Tony Blair tried something similar after 7/7 but came a cropper on the myriad of legal complications. How does one define extremist? These proposals might go a little way to tackling terrorism, but they could easily be abused by the authorities to nail anyone they don't like. This legislation strikes me as a populist and ill-considered response to headline news and we've had it before. Terrorism as a proportion of crime in the UK is very small, so a blanket law like this is more likely to harm the very people it is designed to protect and, moreover, is a step further towards a police state. I have grave reservations. How do you feel?

  • Wrestling dropped from Olympics. A wise decision?

Wrestling has been dropped from the 2020 Olympic Games by the IOC to make way for a new sport, even though it is one of the original events and still very popular.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/21427455

The so-called 'beautiful game', on the other hand, continues to linger like a bad smell. We have the Premier League, the Euros, the World Cup and countless other footballing events 24/7, 365 days a year. No one, not even the most ardent football enthusiast, watches the Olympics with the express intention of following the football, so why bother with it? It's pointless!

How do you feel? Which sport would you like to see introduced/dropped from the Olympic Games?

  • How much does sniping software cost?

I'm trying to purchase a laptop on eBay but I keep getting outbid at the very last second by some snake-in-the-grass. Since no human being could be so quick, I assume these SOBs are making use of 'sniping' software. It's time to beat them at their own game.

Which software do you recommend? How much does it cost to use it? Is it a one-off charge? Thanks in advance.

  • Man tattoos girlfriend: romantic or revolting?

Tattooist Rouslan Toumaniantz met Lesya, tattooed his name on her face within 24 hours of meeting her, then later married her. She's delighted with the results.

Now, I've no problem with tattoos in certain places, but it upsets me when such a beautiful young woman disfigures her face like this. What do you think?

  • Why does the Teaching Chile programme have an application fee?

You have to pay a $50 non-refundable fee via PayPal as well as fill in an online application AND answer six essay questions in order to be considered for jobs on teachingchile.com. I have not encountered anything like this in any of my other applications (which include Mexico, Russia, Japan and Taiwan). Is this some sort of scam? Is this a good investment that will pay dividends, or would I be throwing away money on non-existent job opportunities? Note: I am CELTA-qualified.
