Would/could America ever elect a president who's a self-proclaimed atheist?

Has it ever happened?

In the UK nobody cares about our PM's religion

Not anytime soon. Gallup did a poll on who Americans would be willing to vote for based on religion last year and only 54% of Americans said they would vote for an atheist.

Maybe in 30-40 years. Many Americans still want their president to believe in God and have religious values.

Twenty years ago the suggestion of a non Caucasian President was unthinkable.

I don't know why not!! we keep electing Presidents that claim to be Christians and later come out otherwise!! our present President for example said he was, then changes that to he's muslim and that like saying he's satan himself!!

Here's why, in the UK you are intelligent people.

here in the US the average voter only has 2 brain cells, and despite rubbing them together, has never been able to create a fire.

That was a stupidly easy question, try a harder one... http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=201...

Anything is possible. We have a Muslim in office now. Hell, I'm not even sure he was even born here
