    Real.

    Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (lived 1043 to 1099),a lower rank nobleman from Castile who fought for one side in a civil war there,and later as a mercenary for various Mulsim Emirtaes after being exiled folowing a change of ruler in Castile.

    He was prominent in resisting the Almoravid Berber invasion of Spain in the 1090s.

    He was a real person, but I'm sure that there are many mythologicalized stories surrounding his exploits.
