Today I had a young visitor coming to my house, very nice young lady in her teens, when making her cup tea , and ask her to sit down in the setting-room, she was Wow you are so lucky you have your house decorated in totally in retro style, she was impressed, little did she know that the last time I decorated my house was before i retired 15 years ago lol. Since then I can not effort to redecorate it , that is the reason why it is RETRO lol ! Is your house decorated RETRO too?

Like "Beatniks", our decor is eclectic, but my wife would never allow it to become shoddy. The oldest furnature we have is a lovely, large wooden piece that was my grandparents' radio cabinet in the 1920s. Dad rebuilt it into a very useful desk in the 1940s, and my wife had me remodel it into a bar/liquor cabinet this year. Newest pieces include a nifty modern easy chair and ottoman in the living room, from Ikea, plus new furniture in one of the guest bedrooms.

I'm rather indifferent to decor, but my wife is constantly updating, changing and redecorating. The spare bedroom on the first floor is getting the treatment now - it's been repainted, gotten new furniture & today I've promised to hang a large mirror on one wall and put up a decorative shelf on another.

PS - Come to think of it, my great-grandfather's mantle clock from the 1880s, ticking away in the kitchen, is actually our oldest piece. The dining room table, which belonged to my grandparents, is also older then the liquor cabinet. Hmmm - maybe we're more retro than I first thought?

PPS - I got the mirror & shelf put up, yay!

Used to have modern furniture in the 80's 90's.

Chrome and leather, all sold or given away now.

Moved to eastern Europe and inherited my in-laws furniture.

All funky but functional 1970's communist items.

All items have a dual purpose, bed folds up for day use and all bedding is stored inside the unit.

Several of my things were hand made by my FIL, the desk I now use was a sewing machine stand which he took apart and made new iron legs for.

Self units have areas for holding glass wear and for storing clothing. Mirrors are hidden inside the doors. Super ugly but super practical items.

Very sparse and very basic look to save on space.

The couch can be used as a bed or sofa, the tv stand was another handmade unit my FIL made by welding iron in his garage.

My husbands desk is a huge old wood thing that my FIL used to have in his private resting house off of his main home. When we received it the draws were full of porno photos, a no-no item in commie days, guess the old guy had his secrets after all.

We broke up and burned one clothing cabinet, after we broke it apart we saw it was built by a good cabinet maker in 1908, probably worth a few bucks, a very expensive fire. Have one more really old wooden clothing cabinet, not sure how old it is , my guess is from 1940 or so

Yes my things are retro commie.

No, I grew up with retro things in the 40's and 50's. I am eclectic in that one room is almost Victorian, another is Oriental and scattered contemporary. I like what I like and will find a place for it, and it suits me well. I get nothing but compliments on my decor, so it must work.

Yea--except my "decor" goes back to college days when I lived with crates and cardboard boxes and planks of wood for shelves and such. The trashcan look? I always wondered when other people reach that point where they buy matching furniture sets of things since I never got there and don't really have any friends who have that either--is it something that happens when people get married? I have been thinking of shoving all my furniture out a big window to get rid of it all, and just replacing in the barest minimum (but nicely designed) I can--easier to do the cleaning under/around/on top of it.

Mine is furnished in inherited 30's and 40's heavy wood furniture with the exception of my fathers tropical 1950's Hawaiian bamboo furniture that was in his den.

I wouldn't call my furniture retro.

Then again I don't really know what retro consists of.

No , no retro here. I'm So.Ca. /beach/cottage/ peaceful in my style.

My handyman brought two guys by one day and ask if he could give them a tour of what he and I had done. LOL. The guys looked shy but handyman was very excited to show it off.

  • No, mine is more modern. The only thing that is retro style is down in the basement with the beaded curtains for the doors and windows.
