Springfield xd service moddel 9mm 4"?

I am looking for some information on the brake in period for this gun. I am picking up my new gun this weekend and will probably be using it for the first time Monday. The man i am buying it threw doesn’t know much about Springfield’s and suggested i just do some research. My main questions are is there anything i need to do before i use it such as breaking it down or cleaning? After about how many rounds should i do the first cleaning? Is there a brand of ammo that is best for this gun? I’ll be using it for armed security so is there a brand of ammo that has a good reputation with its JHP for this model.

    1. Read the manual.

    2. Field strip and do a quick cleaning and lube to remove the test fire residue and any storage grease and any other foreign objects. Use this opportunity to inspect and test the operation of the gun.

    3. No break-in is required, but shoot 100-200 rounds to make sure everything is working properly.

    4. Any commercial brass-cased 9mm Luger ammo should be fine for this gun. At the range I shot whatever I can find the cheapest.

    5. Any commercial JHP ammo should be fine. I prefer Federal HST 124 or 147 grain, or Hornady 135 grain ammo, or Speer Gold Dot 124 grain. I try to get +P, if I can. Whatever you choose, shot a box through your gun to make sure it operates properly (no reason why it shouldn't). When you practice at the range you will use mostly FMJ target, but it is a good idea to occasionally practice with your defensive ammo (that's how I rotate mags).

The XD should not need a break in. I agree that you should break it down and clean it, and lubricate it. Make damn sure the barrel is clear.

I would look on youtube to see if there is a video on field stripping and cleaning the XD- I'll bet there is.

Just stay away from "cheap" foreign ammo, and "cheap" gun show reloads.

If it fires the first box of ammo without issue- I'd say its good to go.

But be damn sure that you shoot some of the ammo that you intend to carry.

Don't ever carry any ammo in you gun that you have not tested. Some people will shoot a couple boxes of fmj target ammo, then load up with some high-dollar jhp and never shoot it.

There isn't really a "break in" period on modern guns.

Just clean it properly and shoot the ammo you intend to use through the gun. Aim for about 100-200 rounds with no stoppages before you consider the gun to be reliable enough for daily carry.

You should always disassemble a new gun, clean it, and lube it properly (as specified in the owner's manual). I would run it until it jams if you shoot it that much at the range. Always field strip your guns and clean them when you get home from the range.
