How should I cook Chestnuts?

I gathered some, but am told NOT to eat them; those are the horse-chestnut variety? Anyway, how do I do them, roasted, boiled, steamed? Similar to doing up hazelnuts or walnuts?

I prefer to shell the chestnut first by breaking the hard shell and also to sort out the rotten ones etc. Then you can steam or even boiled them and that way, the chestnut will be moist and soft to chew. But if you want to roast or bake it, you do it when the chestnut is still in its shell to protect the nuts from drying out. You can steam even boiled them but you still have to go through shelling them before eating *

You cant eat the ones from trees in Britton however to cook the good ones is easy simply get the chestnut and on the flat side use a sharp knife and score a cross in it then place in a tray and bake for 5/10mins thats it you do need to remove the shell while hot though for a nice treat through a couple hot chestnuts in to a glass of brandy and leave for 10mins then enjoy

Roast them on an open fire with Jack Frost nipping at your nose.
